Osun State Police Command has broadened its inquiry into the deadly shooting of a driver along the Iwo–Osogbo Road.
This comes as the Command has placed both the Nigeria Customs Service officials and police agents stationed in proximity under examination.
As per the Command Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi on Sunday in a statement, two officers of the Nigeria Customs Service believed to be directly implicated in the shooting are presently in custody as investigations proceed.
Ojelabi also mentioned that police personnel operating a nearby police checkpoint at the moment of the incident are also being examined to ascertain their degree of involvement or reaction during the shooting.
He verified that the alleged shooters had been recognized as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, both affiliated with the customs service.
He asserted that the Police were scrutinizing every facet of the case, including the behavior of personnel present at the scene when the shooting transpired.
“The investigation is underway, and we are investigating each detail surrounding the incident,” Ojelabi stated.
Providing additional information, the command later named the deceased as 41-year-old Anayo Azikwe Michael, a resident of Delta State.
“The deceased hailed from Delta State. His name is Anayo Azikwe Michael, aged 41,” the police spokesperson revealed.
He added that relatives of the victim were already traveling to Osun to pursue the matter and receive further updates from the police.
Ojelabi pointed out that the detained customs personnel had reported to the police headquarters and remain in custody pending the conclusion of the investigation.
He emphasized that the police officers who were on duty at the checkpoint when the event took place would also undergo scrutiny as part of efforts to determine the complete sequence of occurrences.
“We are also subjecting the police officers at the scene to investigation for validation. We will leave no stone unturned in uncovering the root of the matter,” he stated.
Police operatives have sustained their presence in the vicinity following the incident, while residents persist in demanding a transparent inquiry and appropriate measures against anyone found accountable.
