Linus Benedict Torvalds (born December 28, 1969) is a Finnish-American software developer. Linus Torvalds was born in Helsinki, Finland, within a Swedish-speaking household with a prominent lineage in academia and literature. His parents, Anna and Nils Torvalds, were journalists and actively engaged on the University of Helsinki campus throughout the 1960s. In January 1991, Torvalds acquired an Intel 80386-based PC and quickly obtained MINIX, an educational Unix-like operating system created by Andrew Tanenbaum. Frustrated by MINIX’s constraints, he initiated the development of his own kernel in April 1991. The initial Linux prototypes were shared publicly via FTP from a university server in late 1991. Version 1.0 was launched on March 14, 1994. Inspired by Richard Stallman’s address at Helsinki University of Technology in 1991, Torvalds transitioned Linux’s licensing to the GNU General Public License v2.
Between 1997 and 2003, Torvalds was employed at Transmeta in California, concentrating on low-power CPU design.
