Residents of Lagos took to the streets on Friday to voice their anger regarding ongoing electricity interruptions, labeling the state’s power supply as “epileptic” and unfeasible for everyday life and business activities.
A video making rounds on social media depicted numerous protesters, mainly young individuals, marching through the Fadeyi neighborhood, carrying signs and chanting for stable electricity.
The demonstrators condemned what they referred to as the failure of the nation’s power sector, asserting that unpredictable electricity supply is jeopardizing livelihoods and rendering life increasingly challenging throughout Lagos.
Signs held by the protesters bore slogans such as “No More Estimated Billing,” “No More Erratic Power Supply,” “No Light, No Life, No Nation,” and “You’re Ruining Businesses; Provide Us with Reliable Light.”
One protester exclaimed, “We are not demanding too much. Provide us with light!” as the group navigated the streets.
Local entrepreneurs emphasized the harsh impact of unreliable power on their businesses, pointing out that dependence on fuel-driven generators had markedly escalated operating expenses.
A shopkeeper involved in the protest expressed, “We cannot proceed like this. Daily, we waste money on fuel because there is no electricity. Numerous small enterprises are shutting down because they can’t manage.”
The protest signifies escalating public discontent with the state of electricity services in Lagos, with citizens urging the appropriate authorities and power providers to guarantee a consistent and dependable supply.
