A legal expert, Kenneth Okonkwo, has asserted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently the foremost opposition party in Nigeria, anticipating that additional politicians will soon switch to the party.
NAIJATAB previously reported that a total of nine senators have transitioned to the ADC, elevating it to a prominent minority in the National Assembly.
Responding to this during Channels TV’s morning segment on Friday, Okonkwo emphasized that the ADC does not depend on governmental influence or assets to draw members.
He stated that the party’s increasing attraction is fueled by a coalition of opposition figures aiming to contest the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“We’re not APC; we lack the authority to provide and we do not possess resources to offer. It’s not even within our grasp as we are not the ruling authority,” he remarked.
Nevertheless, he asserted that even without holding federal power, the ADC has risen as the most effective opposition platform in the nation.
“The reality is that ADC, the African Democratic Congress, is presently the leading opposition party,” Okonkwo declared.
The attorney pointed out that he had previously advised opposition figures from parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) to come together to effectively contest the ruling party.
“I mentioned this quite some time ago that PDP, LP, and other parties are not effective. The opposition figures and parties should benefit themselves by forming a coalition,” he stated.
As per him, the coalition ultimately agreed to adopt the ADC as the political platform to pursue what he termed the ambition for a new Nigeria.
“When they unified, they could confront the APC, which has positioned itself as an adversary of democracy and undoubtedly an opponent of the people’s welfare,” Okonkwo added.
He further asserted that more politicians are expected to affiliate with the party as the political environment continues to evolve in anticipation of upcoming elections.
“You will observe more politicians joining us shortly, and the APC will soon become a thing of the past by the grace of God,” he stated.
