Kelly was born on July 9, 1957, in Newport Beach, California, as the daughter of Virginia Joan, a homemaker, and Dr. Donald Manson, a physician. She has Scots-Irish ancestry from her father and German roots from her mother’s lineage. She also possesses Welsh ancestry.
Raised in Los Angeles, Kelly attended the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts at Allan Hancock College, located in Santa Maria, California. She later left high school in 1975 and obtained her GED. Subsequently, she relocated to New York City and pursued acting at the Juilliard School, graduating in 1983, Group 12.
