James Norman Mattis was born in Pullman, Washington, on September 8, 1950, to parents John West Mattis and Lucille (Proulx) Mattis. His father was a merchant mariner, while his mother worked in Army Intelligence in South Africa during World War II. Later, his father moved to Richland, Washington, to be employed at a nuclear facility.

James Mattis began his career at 18 when he enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1969. Three years later, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Following the Persian Gulf War, Mattis ascended to the rank of lieutenant colonel.
