Gran Turismo is a 2023 American biographical sports film helmed by Neill Blomkamp, based on a script penned by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin. The idea for a Gran Turismo film emerged in July 2013, with producers Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti attached along with a script by Alex Tse. By June 2015, Joseph Kosinski was set to direct with a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber, but that version stalled in February 2018. In May 2022, the project was revitalized, and Neill Blomkamp promptly agreed to direct in June. Principal casting was revealed in September 2022, with additional actors joining in November. Filming commenced in Hungary that month and concluded in December. Lorne Balfe and Andrew Kawczynski composed the score during the post-production phase.
The film had its global debut at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium on July 30, 2023. It premiered in U.S. cinemas on August 25, 2023, distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It has garnered over $122 million globally on a $60 million budget. Critics offered mixed opinions, commending Blomkamp’s direction and the racing sequences but highlighting script concerns.
