In 1967, Jung reconnected with a childhood friend who enlightened him about the lucrative nature of cannabis smuggling. Initially, he enlisted his then-girlfriend to carry drugs in her handbag during flights. Later, he began acquiring drugs from Puerto Vallarta and Mexico utilizing stolen aircraft. Jung and his partner managed to earn approximately $250,000, which is around $1.6 million in 2020, within a month.
In 1974, Jung faced arrest for trafficking 300 kg of marijuana in Chicago. At that time, he was residing in a Playboy club while seeking connections for marijuana distribution. His contact was apprehended for heroin trafficking and informed authorities about Jung to receive a lighter sentence. Subsequently, Jung was sent to the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury.
While incarcerated at FCI Danbury, he met fellow inmate Carlos Lehder Rivas, who introduced him to the world of international drug trafficking and the Medellin Cartel, while educating him about smuggling. Both were released in 1975 and became business partners in cocaine distribution. They sourced their cocaine from Pablo Escobar, who owned a ranch in Colombia while their contact, Richard Berlie, picked it up in California.
Despite being merely a middleman, he made millions. Eventually, they devised a scheme to steal planes that would transport cocaine at $10,000 per kilogram. Carlos subsequently severed ties with Jung and moved to Berlin. Nevertheless, Jung continued his smuggling operations until his arrest in 1987, though he was released soon after. He undertook various “clean jobs” until 1994 when he reconnected with his Mexican marijuana trafficking associate. While in Topeka, Kansas, he was arrested with 796 kg (1753 pounds) of cocaine and pleaded guilty to three conspiracy charges. He was sentenced to 60 years in prison and was transported to FCI, Los Angeles, and Tuna. However, his sentence was reduced to 20 years, leading to his release on 27 November 2014.
Two years post-release, he was arrested once more for violating parole on 6 December 2016. He was released again on 3 July 2017 after completing his sentence.
