Don William Felder was born on September 21, 1947, in Gainesville, Florida to his parents Doris Rebecca Felder and Charles Nolan Felder. He was raised in a Southern Baptist household.
He completed his education at Gainesville High School, where he encountered Bernie Leadon.
Felder developed an interest in music after witnessing Elvis Presley perform on The Ed Sullivan Show. At 10, he acquired his first guitar and became a self-taught musician. Felder was influenced by rock and roll.
