His father’s name was Louis (1916-1995), a college instructor who played double bass; he was also the dance bandleader of ‘Lee Sims.’ His mother’s name, Belle, who passed away in 2007, was an educator in an elementary school.

In 1945, when he was merely 4, his family relocated to Kew Gardens Hills, Flushing, Queens in New York City. Simon’s passion for baseball and music in NY was rather unusual.
