David Soul Early Life & Age
On August 28, 1943, David Soul entered the world to Dr. Richard W. Solberg and June Johanne (Nelson) in Chicago, Illinois. His father served as a Lutheran Minister, a history and political science professor, and as Director of Higher Education for the Lutheran Church in America, which is now a part of the ELCA. Additionally, he was the Senior Representative for Lutheran World Relief during the reconstruction of Germany post-World War II from 1949 to 1956, while his mother was an educator. Both of Soul’s grandfathers were evangelists, and due to his father’s career, the family frequently relocated during his formative years.
He completed his studies at Washington School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before enrolling at Augustana College, where his father taught political science and history. After two years, he withdrew and moved to Mexico with his family, where he enrolled at the University of the Americas. It was here that Soul redirected his career aspirations towards music, inspired by peers who taught him to play the guitar. His initial performance after leaving Mexico occurred at a venue named The 10 O’Clock in Minneapolis.
