Chuck Lorre: Biography
Charles Micheal Lorre, originally named Charles Micheal Levine, changed his surname to Lorre when he turned 26. He was born in Plainview, New York on October 18, 1952 to a Jewish family. Chuck Lorre studied at the State University of New York at Potsdam but left after two years to follow his ambition as a songwriter. During his time in college, he “majored in rock ‘n’ roll and pot while minoring in LSD.”
Chuck Lorre: Career
In his younger days, Lorre gained fame as a guitarist and songwriter, touring across the United States. He penned songs for artists such as Deborah Harry and also contributed to the soundtrack for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He took a leap into writing and assisted in creating Roseanne. Later, he was dismissed as a writer despite his evident talent. He subsequently crafted his first show titled Frannie’s Turn. Unfortunately, it did not perform well and was canceled in under two months.
Lorre then developed his second show called Grace Under Fire, which became one of the top comedies of that era. The series aired on ABC and garnered a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series. His third project was Cybill, which also turned out to be a hit. The show earned a Primetime Emmy Award in 1995 and received two Golden Globe Awards in the following year.
Lorre created his fourth series, Dharma & Greg, alongside Dottie Zicklin. The series quickly gained immense popularity worldwide, securing numerous nominations for esteemed awards. It racked up a total of eight Golden Globe Award nominations, six Satellite Award nominations, and six Emmy Award nominations.
Together with Lee Aronsohn, they developed Two and a Half Men, the fifth series. Similar to his previous shows, it was well-received, amassing a vast audience who tuned in for each episode. This series continued until 2015.
Lorre also collaborated with Bill Prady on the creation of The Big Bang Theory, which premiered in 2007. The sitcom ranks as one of the best ever produced in television history. He partnered with other writers to create Mom, and served as the executive producer of Mike & Molly.
