The artist is the offspring of a part-time secretary and Yellow Pages manager. She graduated from Firestone High School in Akron and traveled to Cleveland for band performances.

The artist developed an interest in hippie counterculture, Eastern mysticism, and vegetarianism. She enrolled at Kent State University Art School. While at University, she joined a group named Sat-Sun Mat. In 1973, the songwriter relocated to London. She found employment at an architectural firm but departed after eight months.
