Buhari’s govt releases Dariye, Nyame, others from prison

The governance of President Muhammadu Buhari has liberated former Plateau and Taraba States governors Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame from incarceration.

NAIJATAB NEWS remembers that both ex-governors were granted a presidential amnesty by the Council of State, under the direction of President Buhari, on April 14, an event that sparked considerable negative feedback.

Dariye and Nyame were found guilty by Justice Adebukola Banjoko of the Abuja High Court in 2018 for embezzling N1.16bn and N1.6bn, respectively.

Dariye, who served as Plateau Governor from 1999 to 2007, received a 14-year prison sentence, which was later reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, while the Supreme Court confirmed his conviction.

In contrast, Rev Nyame, who was the Taraba Governor from 1999 to 2007, was sentenced to 12 years for misappropriating N1.6bn from the state’s finances. The Supreme Court also affirmed the ruling.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, stated that the council approved 159 out of 162 requests submitted for review concerning the prerogative of mercy for offenders and detainees in correctional facilities across the nation.
