Bola Ahmed Tinubu: Career

Initial Political Journey

Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political journey commenced in 1992 upon joining the Social Democratic Party, becoming part of the Peoples Front faction led by Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, alongside notable politicians such as Umaru Yar’Adua, Atiku Abubakar, Baba Gana Kingibe, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, Magaji Abdullahi, Dapo Sarumi, and Yomi Edu. He was elected to the Senate, representing the Lagos West constituency during the brief Nigerian Third Republic.

After the annulment of the 12 June, 1993 presidential elections, Tinubu co-founded the pro-democracy National Democratic Coalition. This group rallied support for the reinstatement of democracy and acknowledged Moshood Abiola as the rightful winner of the 12 June election. Following the military coup led by General Sani Abacha, he sought refuge in exile in 1994. He returned to Nigeria in 1998 after the death of the military ruler, which paved the way for the transition to the Fourth Nigerian Republic.

In preparation for the 1999 elections, Bola Tinubu aligned himself with Alliance for Democracy (AD) leaders Abraham Adesanya and Ayo Adebanjo. He subsequently triumphed in the AD primaries for the Lagos State gubernatorial elections, overcoming Funsho Williams and Wahab Dosunmu, a former Minister of Works and Housing. Tinubu campaigned for the Governorship of Lagos State on the AD ticket and was elected.

Subsequent Political Engagement

In 2007, following the overwhelming success of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the April 2007 elections, Tinubu actively participated in efforts to unify the fragmented opposition parties into a “mega-party” able to contest with the PDP. In February 2013, his negotiations led to the establishment of a “mega opposition” party, resulting in the merger of Nigeria’s three largest opposition parties – the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the new PDP (nPDP), a faction of serving governors from the then-ruling People’s Democratic Party – into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 2014, Tinubu endorsed former military head of state General Muhammadu Buhari, leader of the CPC faction of the APC, who enjoyed substantial support in Northern Nigeria and had previously ran in the 2003, 2007, and 2011 presidential elections as the APC candidate. Initially wishing to become Buhari’s running mate, he later acquiesced to Yemi Osibanjo, his ally and former commissioner of justice. In 2015, Buhari led the APC to victory, marking the end of the sixteen-year tenure of the PDP and marking the first instance in Nigeria’s history where an incumbent president was defeated by an opposition candidate.

Tinubu has been pivotal in the Buhari administration, endorsing government policies while maintaining his role within the party despite his long-rumored presidential ambitions. In 2019, he supported Buhari’s re-election campaign, which led to the defeat of PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar. Following an internal crisis within the party in 2020 that resulted in the removal of Tinubu ally and party chairman Adams Oshiomole, it is speculated that this move was intended to undermine Tinubu’s presidential chances ahead of 2023.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu: Allegations of Corruption

In April 2007, subsequent to the elections but prior to Babatunde Fashola assuming office, the Federal Government summoned Tinubu before the Code of Conduct Bureau for allegations of illegal management of 16 distinct foreign accounts. In January 2009, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission exonerated Tinubu and governors James Ibori of Delta State and Obong Victor Attah of Akwa Ibom State from accusations of conspiracy, money laundering, abuse of office, and official corruption in relation to the sale of V-mobile network shares in 2004.

In March 2009, reports indicated that a plot had been discovered to assassinate Tinubu. The Alliance for Democracy urged the Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, to carry out a thorough inquiry. However, in September 2009, there were indications that the British Metropolitan Police were looking into a transaction involving the Lagos State government investing in Econet (now Airtel). Tinubu contended that the transaction was direct and beneficial to the state, without any intermediaries. The Federal Government denied a request from Britain for the provision of evidence required for further investigation and prosecution of the three Nigerian ex-governors in a court in London.

Tinubu is widely regarded as the “Godfather of Lagos”, utilizing his political clout in the mega city-state to affect regional and national matters. His influence in the city-state was highlighted in The Lion of Bourdillion, a 2015 documentary that showcased Tinubu’s political and financial dominance in the city-state. Tinubu filed an N150 billion libel lawsuit against the producers, AIT, resulting in the documentary ceasing to air on 6 March 2015.

However, incidents such as his domineering approach towards successors, as observed in December 2009 when Fashola and Tinubu reportedly had a rift over Fashola’s re-election in 2011, with Tinubu preferring the environment commissioner, Muiz Banire. A similar conflict arose in 2015 regarding Fashola’s successor, with Tinubu backing Akinwunmi Ambode, who later succeeded Fashola but was subsequently removed from office by Tinubu in favor of the current Babajide Sanwo-Olu, highlight his remarkable influence in the city-state. During the 2019 election campaign, a bullion van was noted entering Tinubu’s residence on Bourdillion Road in Ikoyi, to which Tinubu remarked, “I keep money wherever I desire.”
